Small Group Instruction is also called "Guided Math", "Centres" and/or "Workstations", but each of these has a slightly different meaning. When we say "small group instruction" we mean that the teacher has structured the classroom to meet with small groups of students for 10 - 20 minutes at a time to give feedback, assess, and differentiate instruction. Some people use the term "guided math" to refer to this group instruction, as a teacher guides students through modeling, understanding concepts and demonstrating procedures. The rest of the class is working independently, usually in groups that have different tasks at different "centres" or "workstations", such as a technology group that are using digital practice or learning, a paper/pencil group working on an assignment, a group doing a game or activity, etc.
Establishing group instruction routines is essential for meeting the needs of our learners.
